The importance of having a container to store your firearm is no longer in question, but some are still debating whether it is best to buy a new or used gun safe. There are certain factors that you will need to account for carefully.
The reason that people will want to buy a second hand container of course, is that they will be able to get it at lower the price, and considering that some of the newer and high end variants do cost quite a lot, these can result in potentially a lot of savings. However, you also need to look at the long term: how long will you be able to use the container?
You also need to assess your own needs. Assuming that it only costs half of what a new one will, you have to ask yourself what kind of protection can it give? Is that used gun safe equipped with bolts? These are now standard features in products being issued out, and are necessary. Also, what kind of material is it made of? Can it shield your firearm against burning or weather extremes? Of course, you also need to consider the locks that come with the device.
Even if the item is in good condition, if it is too old, it may not be of much use; a lot of the older models were composed of
wood and do not last as long as the ones that come out today. Of course if it does not have a certification from the RSC, you can forget about it. If you did buy it, chances are it will break down after only a few weeks or months and the money you thought you could save on that used gun safe will end up costing you more.
This is not to say that they are all worthless of course. Some are of high quality and are sold by their owners because they no longer have a need for it or have purchased new ones. The important thing to consider here is that before forking over your money, you must scrutinize it closely. Here knowledge of how these firearm storages work is essential. For example, if it is said to be fire proof, you will know that it needs to have a lining.
Being knowledgeable about the various types of locks used will be helpful too. If the used gun safe is still quite new, it will have either a mechanical or electrical lock. Be sure to test it first before buying. If it utilizes a mechanical lock, it should have a key lock to keep the combination even more secure.
As stated earlier, the RSC certification is required for all firearm containers in the US, and this is actually the first thing you should look for. Other more obvious signs will be any dents, chippings or scratches on the safe itself. Their presence will give you a good idea of how much mileage the container has left.
There is nothing wrong with buying a used gun safe provided you go over the essential facts. Once you have set down all the necessary requirements and realize that they are being met, you can be confident that your purchase is a sound one.
